Please take the time to look through this page, it will help explain what you need to do prior to testing the software.

Download and installation

Once you've downloaded SailView 2009 you install by double clicking the .MSI file.  Please read through the End User License Agreement!

SailView installs in two parts, the first part installs all of the tools along with LIVE and ANALYZE.  It also unpacks a second install routine (part 2) that will install REPLAY.  REPLAY has additional hardware requirements so you may not want to install it on a lower power laptop.

The license agreement (which you just read right?) allows you to install on up to three machines.

During the public preview stage everything is fully functional with no limits.  However the software will expire and stop running on May15th.

Once the public preview phase is over we will release the retail version.  The retail version is the full installation but each of the the apps (LIVE, ANALYZE and REPLAY) will only run for 15 minutes then shut down.  If you purchase a license that time limit obviously goes away.

This should give you enough time (yet be annoying enough) to let you evaluate and then purchase a license.

Simulation

In order for you to get an idea of what SailView does you need to either have all of the hardware setup and be on your boat or (since that is most likely not practical) you need to run the data simulator.

SailView 2009 ships with a simple boat/NMEA simulator.  We decided to leave that code out of the actual LIVE application because the smaller the application the better the performance on lower powered PC hardware.

LIVE has the ability to connect to NMEA hardware directly through a COM port or via a network connection.

Since NMEA hardware doesn't generally TCP/IP networks we provide a tool that makes that possible.  There's more information about that in the connections section but for now know that we use the same technology to get the simulated data into LIVE for demonstration.

There's another advantage, you get to see how it really interacts with data being provided externally.

Enough talk lets get it up and running.

Getting it all running

There are a couple steps to go through once you've downloaded and installed the application.

First, open Start/Programs/Weathergage Software and launch SailView 2009 Boatsim.  You'll see the screen below, click 'Start' and the simulator will start running.

Next, open SailView 2009 LIVE also in the Weathergage Software programs group.  You'll see the screen below.

Live opening screen

Click the 'NMEA' tab (next to 'File') and select 'TCP/IP'.  In the dialog that opens enter an IP address.  This tells LIVE where to look for data.  Since you are running everything on one machine you can use the special (loopback) address of '127.0.0.1' and hit connect.  You'll see a message at the bottom of LIVE indicating it found a connection.

TCP/IP connect

LIVE and the Boat Simulation are now talking, you can open gauges and generally explore the functions of LIVE.  You can change the boat heading and the wind parameters in the simulator and watch how LIVE reacts.

The Right Mouse Button (RMB) will expose additional features.  For instance open a digital gauge, RMB click it and you can change the color of the gauge and the text.
